In a long life most of us will be many people. Truth be known, at any time we are not the same person either as others see us or as we want to be seen. In the case of Penelope Ann Gottsman, all of these perceptions change in the course of her story. What happens to her and how she makes her way, usually alone, through the transition from a respectable young woman in late 18th century Philadelphia to the life of a gun dealer in Bellavista, Nevada is a story filled with challenges and adventures. Married three times, to Mr. Reilly, her father's business associate in Philadelphia, Mr. Carter and to Left Dog Round, the true love of her life, Pen has one child, Nathan. A woman in reduced circumstances with an unruly child, she still manages to make good friends and become an important part of the growing town of Bellavista. The story uses the real lives of women in that time to erase many of the assumptions about how women lived and worked, but it is not polemic wrapped in plot but life made understandable through storytelling.
